Growing together in a time of change: reflections from our autumn team retreat

This year’s autumn retreat gave us the space to reconnect, meet each other in person, and come together during an important phase of transition at Systemic Justice.

A real highlight was spending time with our new Executive Director, Saranel. Although most of us had already met in person before, the retreat offered the perfect setting to get to know her beyond the screen. Watching her and our Founder, Nani, work side by side, facilitating sessions, and holding space together, made the care behind this leadership transition unmistakable. Their thoughtful, intentional collaboration created a sense of continuity and steadiness: this transition is being shaped with care, giving the team a solid foundation for the years ahead.

The days were a blend of reflection, connection, and small adventures. We opened by sharing personal objects, poems, and songs that reveal what matters to us: a simple exercise that brought depth and closeness. Throughout the retreat, we explored our hopes and shared values.

Two sessions stood out as especially memorable. One was our campfire-style conversation with Saranel, where we gathered around in a circle to talk about leadership, grounding, and what it means to step into this next chapter together. The setting was warm, open, even slightly magical – and it made space for sincerity, curiosity, and a shared sense of excitement.

The other highlight came when Nani guided us back through our shared history. We revisited the story of how Systemic Justice came to be, mapping our milestones, challenges, and moments of joy. Tracing our steps from the early days to now allowed us to see what we’ve built, and how we’ve grown as a collective. It was grounding and energising at once.

Later, paired reflection walks turned nature into a co-facilitator. As we wandered along quiet paths, crossed fields, encountered curious local sheep, and even stumbled upon a vending machine full of Dutch cheese and strawberries.

We closed with a gratitude circle, gathering the insights and intentions that had emerged throughout the week. We returned home with new ideas and direction, and with the feeling of being part of a team that’s growing and moving forward together with shared intention, purpose, and joy.
